About Muscle Energy Technique (M.e.t.)

Muscle Energy Technique, or M.E.T., is a non-manipulative option for treatment of hips, pelvis, sacrum and low back. The technique promotes lengthening of short muscles, mobilization of stiff joints, and stabilization of weakened or compromised joints.

In Muscle Energy Technique, the provider directs the session, guided by established protocol. M.E.T. treatment requires the provider to accurately position the client’s body. Once the optimum position is achieved the client actively uses their own muscles gently, upon request from the provider, to achieve the treatment results. Because of the detailed nature of this work, comprehensive assessment is a necessary, ongoing part of treatment.


About the hendrickson method (hm)

The Hendrickson Method, or HM, is a systematized approach to orthopedic massage and manual therapy that may complement the resolution of a broad range of conditions. HM draws from three primary disciplines: muscle energy technique, massage therapy, and low-velocity joint mobilization technique. In the context of HM, muscle energy technique is used to relax muscles, enhance range-of-motion, and reduce pain. The signature HM massage stroke is an effective, “feel-good” variation of deep, cross-fiber friction. HM utilizes slow, gentle joint mobilization techniques to help lubricate the joints and further enhance range-of-motion.

In the Hendrickson Method, the client co-directs the session with the provider to prioritize the client’s desired outcome. HM can be provided as a general, full-body treatment, where assessment may be limited to gathering essential information about the client (such as contraindications for massage). HM can also be directed to promote resolution of specific pain/injury conditions, in which case assessment may be thorough and ongoing.


the m.e.t. session

Muscle Energy Technique does not utilize the strokes of classic massage in which pressure is applied to the client’s body. As such, M.E.T. treatment does not require the client to disrobe, and does not involve lubricant.

The client should wear a thin layer of clothing that facilitates modesty, palpation and movement (i.e., thin sweat pants, yoga pants, thin shorts, or full-coverage underwear). Denim, thick waste-bands, generally thick, and tight-fitting clothing are not ideal.





the hm session

The Hendrickson Method, in common with regular sports massage, does not require the client to fully disrobe and thus does not regularly utilize draping. Signature HM massage strokes are performed without lubricant and may be applied through clothing. In general clients should wear a thin layer of clothing that facilitates modesty, palpation and movement (i.e., thin sweat pants, yoga pants, thin shorts, or full-coverage underwear). Denim, thick waste-bands, generally thick, and tight-fitting clothing are not ideal.

Traditional massage strokes using lotion, and thus requiring disrobing and draping, are not typical to the standard HM session, but may be incorporated upon request from the client. Such strokes involving lotion may be useful, especially for general relaxation (as in Swedish massage), or to help relieve chronic thickening in muscles and fascia (as in Deep Tissue massage).

Muscle Energy Technique is ideal for runners who suffer from loss of hip range-of-motion; pelvic slips, rotations and flares; pubic elevation/depression; sacral unilateral flexion/extension and torsion; lumbar hypomobility; and related pain.

For runners with hypermobility in the pelvis/sacrum/low back areas, M.E.T. offers take-home drills that promote static and dynamic stability.






why hm?

The Hendrickson Method is ideal for runners who suffer from plantar fasciitis; shin splints; iliotibial band (ITB) syndrome; hamstring strain, and related pain.

The Hendrickson Method is also a great system for preventative care. Many clients elect to receive HM on a regular basis as an inexpensive and enjoyable way to maintain general wellness.
