History
Charles Strange became involved with massage through his practice of martial arts. He initially studied systems of bodywork such as Thai massage, Shiatsu, and Tui Na massage. Over time his interest expanded into other areas of bodywork including Deep Tissue massage, Myofascial Release and Trigger Point technique. Today he uses Muscle Energy Technique as the core of his regular therapy practice, integrated with soft tissue massage and joint mobilization techniques.
Charles studied the Hendrickson Method of Massage Therapy from 2016, and worked as a massage therapist at the Hendrickson Chiropractic Clinic from 2017, until the closing of the clinic in 2021. The Hendrickson Method combines a form of stretching called Muscle Energy Technique with soft tissue massage and gentle joint mobilization. Muscle Energy Technique (MET) is a form of active-resistance stretching that delivers results faster than traditional passive stretching, and can also be useful to ease pain and discomfort. While working at the Hendrickson Clinic, Charles received positive feedback for having a “sensitive and listening touch” with the Muscle Energy Techniques, while having a “firm and accurate” massage stroke.
Charles furthered his education in articular Muscle Energy Technique by attending four trainings with Tom Ockler, P.T. in 2019. Charles learnt the assessments and MET treatment protocols for the spine and hip/shoulder girdles. Charles has since focused and specialized in providing accurate, gentle and effective treatments for conditions affecting the pelvis: up/down slips, pubic elevations/depressions, in/out flares, forward/backward rotations, sacral torsions, and unilateral sacral flexions/extensions.
Muscle Energy Technique is completely non-manipulative; there are no high speed thrusts, or snap-crackle-pop sounds. The treatment is effective because it engages the tiny muscles that live close to the joints, helping them to release and stretch, thus freeing the joint. Because the treatment is considered non-manipulative (slow and low-force), it is within the scope of massage therapy practice. However, it is a powerful technique for addressing fixations and asymmetry in the places where the bones meet!
